Polly Gonzalez, Co-Anchor, KLAS-TV, Channel 8, Friend and Mom

She was one of the most precious earth angels in the desert, who reached out and touched many thousands within the community. From her two beautiful daughters, Sabrina and Gabriella, to her loyal viewers at KLAS-TV Channel 8, to her beloved Latino community, family and friends, Polly Gonzalez led the way by encouraging all to believe in the beauty of their dreams and for our youth to pursue their education.

In one of those strange events, which nobody can understand, Gonzalez’ life was cut short in a single car accident as she was driving back to Las Vegas from her hometown of San Jose, California. The community was shocked and sad-dened to hear that this energetic lady no longer would be with us.

Gonzalez was a true role model. She worked tirelessly from her humble beginnings to graduate from San Jose State University. From there she shaped a well-respected career as a newscaster and joined Channel 8 in 1994, where she eventually co-anchored the news.

In remembrance, The Polly Gonzalez Scholarship Fund has been set up by KLAS-TV Channel 8 and Bank of America to help with future educational costs for her daughters.

To My Mom poem, as read by Sabrina


Children are a gift from God, created by His hand.

Each is wrapped uniquely, according to His Plan.

He breathes in them the breath of life and numbers all their days,

Appoints to each a purpose, according to His Ways.

He chooses very carefully to whom He sends each one,

And then He waits expectantly as each gift is undone.

One day God wrapped a special gift. Inside it He placed you.

He then delivered it to me and watched what I would do.

Instead of opening up my gift, I gave it back to Him

Choosing to give up the life that He had placed within.

I wish there was a way that He could send you back to me.

For now the treasure of your life my eyes would surely see.

The gift of you has changed my heart, more than words can say.

And now that I’m forgiven, I am longing for the day

When I can open up my gift and see you face to face,

And finally hold you in my arms in God’s eternal place.
