Douglas Beckley, Entrepreneur, Beckley Communications, Philanthropist
It is said less than 3% of the Las Vegas population was born in the state of Nevada. In regard to the Beckley family, four generations have grown up in this area and flourished in its desert paradise, including successful entrepreneur, philanthropist and gifted speaker Douglas Beckley.
"My grandfather traveled from Illinois looking for opportunity right after the turn of the century. He came after his friend, Ed Von Tobel, told him about this amazing place in the middle of nowhere. When he got here, the most amazing thing was Las Vegas consisted of a few tents and dirt roads."
In time, he opened the first men’s clothing store in town, Beckley’s Men’s Furnishings. "Eventually, this site became the Pioneer Club, which our family had for over a half a century until a few years ago." Their famous Fremont Street sign, Vegas Vic, became a Las Vegas landmark.
"My dad was born here. He went to Stanford, then practiced law in San Francisco for several years before moving back," recalls Beckley. "He founded a law firm, which grew in prominence and would eventually include former Nevada Governor Bob Miller and current U.S. Senator Harry Reid. Today, the firm is known as Beckley-Singleton and is one of the top law firms in the state of Nevada."
Doug graduated from college with a concentration in business economics and landed a job in banking within one week of graduation. He learned a lot, but eventually, the entrepreneurial bug hit him hard. "I wanted to own my own business and took a look at over 60 possible business opportunities.
"In 1993, I found a Mail Boxes Etc. up for sale on Flamingo and Maryland Parkway. I purchased it, then later, two more. The Flamingo store became No. 1 in the world for business services out of over 4,500 Mail Boxes Etc. stores and the No. 1 store in Nevada. It is ranked in the top 1% in the world for revenues." The franchise is now called the UPS Store.
"Then around 1994, Gard Jameson approached me with an opportunity to become the first paid executive director of the Nevada Community Foundation, which I accepted. I soon worked all the time. We started out at about $2 million in assets. Today, The Community Foundation has over $25 million in assets and a distinguished and highly-talented board, which includes Sherman Frederick, Senator Richard Bryan and Darlene Ensign."
The Nevada Community Foundation enables the donors to realize their philanthropic dreams. Through donor funds, grants are made out to the local community to all types of non-profits and charitable groups. "A favorite. One of our donors put up the funds to build Metro’s first K-9 training facility in Nevada. Those dogs became part of the search and rescue team at the World Trade Towers."
Today, Beckley imparts his success strategies to others through The Beckley Group, his training and consulting business, which helps local companies realize their goals. A professional speaker and licensed Episcopal preacher, Beckley recently received thunderous applause after one of his keynotes at the Las Vegas College graduation ceremonies.
While devoting leisure time to 10-year-old daughter Kendall, Douglas Beckley also concentrates on his numerous business and philanthropic successes. Over four generations strong, the Beckley family continues to help build a better Nevada.
