Robert Cromeans has followed in the inspiring footsteps of fellow Scottish countryman Andrew Carnegie, who immigrated to the United States with near nothing in the 19th century in search of a better life. Carnegie built his empire from scratch and became the richest man in the world with his steel mills, while Cromeans became one of the world’s leaders and innovators in the rapidly-changing beauty industry.
"When I grew up living in Scotland, I always knew that I would come to America," recalls Cromeans. "In 1985, with a few hundred bucks, I drove to London and hopped on a plane to the States and ended up in Memphis, Tennessee. When I first came here, the first thing I did was go to beauty school. I worked two jobs. I even delivered pizza. I still remember my father saying, don’t go to hair school, you will never make a living at it."
While in beauty school, Cromeans was introduced to the legendary Jeanne Braa of John Paul Mitchell Systems. "She was a director of the company and a protege of Paul Mitchell for about nine years. I later traveled with her and became her protege for about 10 years. Paul Mitchell, the man, had a big impact in my life’s journey."
Over the past two decades, Cromeans created a winning combination with John Paul Mitchell Systems, co- founders John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell, building up his world-renowned and exclusive Paul Mitchell Signature Salons. In 1995, he opened his first salon with his wife Margaret, an 800-square-foot salon in San Diego, and later expanded with three more area salons and a Paul Mitchell School in downtown San Diego.
In 1999, they expanded to Las Vegas with the Robert Cromeans Salon in the beautiful Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. "Our first day of business we did $10,000." In 2004, his fourth ARCS, A Robert Cromeans Salon, opened to grand reviews at Mandalay Place, and in 2005, a fifth ARCS salon opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Cromeans has a unique balance of both creativity and strong business sense. He is the artistic director for John Paul Mitchell Systems and travels the world sharing the latest in hair care. "On average, I get to speak to between 300,000 - 500,000 hairdressers a year." He was named Platform Artist of the Year for the past five years, which was voted on by his peers within the hair care industry.
"The business of beauty is to make all people feel beautiful. One hair show I picked a girl who was probably 260 pounds for a makeover. They all said, what are you doing? I said, not everyone is a super model. By the time we finished with her color, hair cut, makeup and wardrobe, her self-esteem changed. She never lost it. She transformed. We stole the show in front of thousands. That’s beautiful."
Robert Cromeans and team have worked their artistic magic on dozens of celebrities, including Tony Robbins, Steven Tyler, Ben Affleck and Stevie Nicks. They also have created some of the latest fashion trends for the "Billboard Music Awards" and "MTV Music Awards."
Many said it couldn’t be done, yet Cromeans has proven them wrong. Today, things look very bright for the Scottish immigrant with the flair for a better life. Combined sales in the Robert Cromeans Salon network are now on track to exceed $10 million. In addition, over 160 valued employees are living the life of their dreams in a rewarding profession. They get to help thousands look and feel beautiful about themselves and to help them celebrate life each day to the fullest.
