Thanks to Joseph Sugarman, one of the nation’s premiere sunglass companies is located right here in Las Vegas. But the trail to his success didn’t start here. It started in the early 1970s when Sugarman formed JS&A Group, Inc. in Northbrook, Illinois, in the basement of his home.
He was successful marketing the world’s first pocket calculator through mail order sales. Later he sold cordless telephones, digital watches, and com-puters. Then a few years after starting his enterprise he hit upon a novel idea.
In 1973 Sugarman introduced the use of a toll free number to take credit card orders over the phone — something that had never been done before. His company grew dramatically and one year later most other mail order companies were following in his foot-steps.
His full-page advertisements in mag-azine and newspapers set the standard for advertising at the time catapulting JS&A into the largest single source of space age products in the nation. He continued to grow introducing hun-dreds of new innovative products that utilized the then new integrated circuit.
In 1986, Sugarman introduced the world to BluBlocker sunglasses and a few years later, in 1988, he moved his company to Las Vegas where it has been ever since. Through innovative direct marketing including television infomercials, Sugarman has sold more than 20 million pairs of BluBlocker sunglasses world-wide from his world headquarters in Las Vegas and through retail outlets like Walgreens and shopping channels such as QVC.
"I failed at practically everything I tried in the early years but I never gave up," says Sugarman. "I just knew that one of these days I’d make it if I just hung in there." And make it he did, becoming one of the leading direct marketers in the United States. Sugarman’s own positive perspective on life gives us all hope to keep on plugging away at our dreams and eventually one day, things will come together for the better.
"I have always believed that whatever happens to you in life, it is for the best," stresses Sugarman. "You might not realize it at the time, but if you believe this principle, it becomes easier to pick yourself up after a failure and go on. I found the secret is simply to never give up."
Today, Sugarman spends a great deal of time at his Maui, Hawaii ocean-front home where he published the local weekly newspaper, the "Maui Weekly" for the past six years until its sale earlier this year.
Sugarman’s books and his top-notch hands-on seminars have inspired thousands of enterprising individuals throughout the world to achieve their dreams.
