Lark Williams, Radio Host, KXPT - 97.1, TV Host, Las Vegas Home Show
The bumpy journey between California and Nevada has not always been such a smooth ride for Lark Williams, one of Las Vegas’ most beloved and respected radio and television personalities.
"In the mid-1960s, my parents moved here from California," recalls Williams. "I disliked Las Vegas at first. There wasn’t much to do. It was just plain hot, no trees, no green, no ocean. The beauty of the desert was incomprehensible to me at that time. I even tried to roller skate back to California.
"When we came to Las Vegas, my father, Frank Williams, built up his air conditioning business and ended up being the chief engineer for many major hotels. He taught by example. I grew up without limitations thinking anything was possible."
Williams first experienced these limit-less possibilities at 11 years old, as well as a new side of Vegas when she was invited backstage by legendary drummer, Buddy Rich, the father of her childhood friend, Cathy Rich. "I met Frank Sinatra who was larger than life. He said, aren’t you a pretty little girl. I remember to this day how Frank Sinatra made me feel so special. I knew I wanted to be around this world."
She was always a bit ahead of her time. Williams entered grade school at 4, was trained in classical guitar at 7, graduated from high school at 15, and received her degree in Theater Arts and Music from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, UNLV, well before her 18th birthday.
Williams is no stranger to tragedy. Her home burned when she was 15, she escaped the MGM fire at 21, she was fired from radio, went through a difficult divorce, and faced the death of her mother, yet, "I try and stay positive no matter what comes my way and always look forward to the gift in whatever comes along.
"I started in radio at age 17, as an intern in the late 1970s. I then toured with the Folies Bergere through South America and saw a new and magical world out there. Returning, every time I tried to leave radio, it pulled me in again, just like a riptide. I’m also an independent thinker. There are not many people in this business who’ve lasted as long as I have. Great friends like Mike O’Brien and Tony Bonnici, the general manager of Lotus Broadcasting, have helped make this journey of 25-plus years in radio the most exciting time of my life."
Today, Williams is host of her own top-rated radio show with a huge and loyal fan base on The Point, KXPT, 97.1, playing classic rock ‘n’ roll.
She has interviewed top rock legends, such as the Eagles, Peter Frampton, and even Stevie Wonder. A favorite interview? "Eric Clapton rarely does interviews," she recalls. "He is a dream come true, so humble and pure, and is the happiest he has ever been, now playing clean and sober."
On television, Williams is the popular host of "The Home Show" as well as the upcoming "Going Vertical with Lark." For 10 years, she has showcased information on the American dream, helping make new home ownership a reality in Southern Nevada.
Williams has helped many worthy local causes, ranging from MDA and Safe Nest for Families of Domestic Violence, to Toys for Tots and animal care. "It’s a treasure to help out in many ways and make people smile."
This strong spirited, once shy, golden-haired little girl from California has blossomed, persevered and earned her own niche as the rock ‘n’ roll, and Home Show goddess, of Las Vegas.
