When you put together a native Nevadan, a top lawyer, a Henderson, Nevada, resident for 48 years, the secretary and past chairman of the board for the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority, a loving husband, and the father of six won-derful children, all who are currently in college, what type of super-star team might this consist of?
Surprisingly, you might come up with one unique and incredibly hardworking person, community leader Jim Gibson, who was re-elected to his second term as mayor of Henderson, Nevada, the second largest city in the state, and one of America’s fastest-growing cities.
"I was born here in Las Vegas," Gibson fondly recalls. "By the time I was in kindergarten, we moved to Henderson. My father was an engineer, and he had a job with one of the local plants. Henderson is the city of the American dream. I don’t think there is another place I’m aware of where you can live it out so completely as here. We lived in the best little town anywhere. We didn’t know of any limitations. We all expected we could do whatever we dreamed we could do."
Gibson worked as a top practicing attorney in the areas of business and commercial law and litigation for over 25 years. He also served as general counsel for the operating subsidiaries of American Pacific Corporation. In 1997, he was elected to his first term as mayor of Henderson.
The city of Henderson just celebrated its 50th anniversary and is situated on the southern side of the Las Vegas Valley. Over 220,000 residents and 25 master planned communities comprise the city, from the Green Valley Ranch community to the $5 billion-plus Lake Las Vegas development.
"One of the things I am most proud of is we were the first to require new developers in Henderson to provide land for schools if they wanted to build houses. Also, we have unmatched parks and recreation facilities here, just like big league parks.
"I’ve been fortunate to work with many people through the years who share my vision of what Henderson and this valley can become. People like Bob Broadbent and Bruce Wood-bury and the members of our City Council have all shared that vision and have helped make this valley what it is today.
"The greatest influence in my life was my father, a 30-year legislator. All he ever wanted to do was to make a difference and do the right thing. What motivates me is seeing if I can make a difference. My family is the keystone for me, and is what holds everything together. My wife is the one who helps me keep the balance.
"In my view, The American dream lives itself out every day in this city. We focus on what we really do well, which is to make a wonderful place for families to live and enjoy. We have something for just about everybody.
"Serving as the mayor of Henderson has been a perfect fit for me. I strive every day to live up to the image of what we want to create in this community. An enormous amount of responsibility goes along with it as well, along with an enormous amount of fun and excitement, too."
Henderson’s very own local boy has made good on his promise to help build a better community. Thanks to business and political dynamo Jim Gibson, thousands upon thousands of residents, both new and old, now can claim their own piece of the American dream in sunny Southern Nevada.
