Behind all the superb entertainment and all the spectacle is Nicole "ND" Durr, producer, creator and director of the world-renowned smash hit, "Havana Night Show," which has played to hundreds of thousands of admiring fans in 16 countries since its first grass roots show in 1998.
"I came to America with one suitcase. I was just 17. I did some modeling. My first job was a toothpaste commercial. I was always interested in creating. I was a photographer, a clothes designer, I had a fashion line, I did costumes for many famous people, outfits for their tours. I designed tiles, cutleries and carpets. I was also producing and recording music. I was never afraid of experimenting. There are no boundaries. My philosophy: if you want something, you can get it.
"You may not believe this, I’ve never produced or directed a show in my life before this." Then how did she end up in Cuba and how did she ever put together such an amazing show?
Long story, short version, circa 1997. "I’m in Hong Kong sitting across from a high roller. I get a call on the phone and I’ll never forget it. A former promoter who worked for me calls and says, ND, you have to come to Cuba. It is incredible. The talent, the music, you will love it. I told the high roller I had a Cuban show for him and flew straight from Hong Kong to Cuba. When I held my first audition, only two performers showed up."
Durr never quit and moved forward with her vision. Over a six-year period, over 600 of the best entertainers in Cuba auditioned for the show. The top 50 eventually toured the world and performed in 16 countries, including 22 cities in Australia alone. Durr also endured jail time in Castro’s Cuba and was barred from ever returning.
In July 2005, after years of struggle, her 50 Cuban performers were finally granted political asylum in America. "We are an American dream. My cast is my family and they are now getting to experience our great freedoms in every aspect of their lives."
The close-knit, 50-member "Havana Night Club" family has dazzled audiences at The Stardust on the Strip for over a year now. From the mambo to the cha-cha, their sizzlin’, high-energy show takes audiences on one incredible journey through the historic Cuban heritage and nightlife. Their energetic singers, dancers and musicians are superb. "Vamos a la Fiesta" says it all so well.
How could Nicole "ND" Durr and her "extended family" ever top their many earlier successes? Capturing their essence, a spectacular new DVD of their once-in-lifetime performance before an audience of 14,000 in Miami currently is available and is receiving rave reviews. In addition, a new book project and full-length feature movie are on the horizon. All these bold new dreams ahead are keeping ND and her "Havana Night Show" family radiating with a renewed level of freedom, passion and hope.
